ABSTRACT
A randomized experimental study was carried out in the Provincial Hospital of Ciego de Avila, from January to June 2007. The sample consisted of 140 patients randomly assigned into two groups. Group I was given a dose of 10 mg of bupivacaine 0.5% and Group II received 15 mg of the same agent. Were studied: time of onset of anesthesia, latency period, level of obtained blockage, presence of hypotension, other complications associated with spinal anesthesia and total anesthetic time. No significant differences were found between groups regarding the variables of time studied. The anesthetic level ranged mostly between D6 and D9 in Group I and between D6 and D7 in Group II. 45 patients developed hypotension in Group I and 59 in Group II. Other complications observed were tremors, nausea and vomiting. Bupivacaine 0.5% is very useful in cesarean section by its short latency period, adequate anesthetic level and prolonged action. Its use is associated with arterial hypotension, tremor, nausea and vomiting-all of which decreases with decreasing the dose of the drug. A protocolization of its use is recommended.REFERENCES
