ABSTRACT
Coccidioidomycosis is a disease that is endemic to North and South America, and is caused by the fungus
Coccidioides
immitis and Coccidioides posadasii. Several studies suggest genetic variability in these fungi. There is also a recombinant
reproductive system, besides a sexually system reproduction, however, this is not confirmed. This review presents an
overview of the works on the genetic variability and population structure. Genetic diversity in these species may have
important implications in virulence and antifungal susceptibility.
