Temporomandibular disorders in climacteric middle age women

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the number of women reaching adulthood is increasing, so that menopause and changes in health associated with it are a global health problem of interest.
Objective: to identify the presence of temporomandibular disorders in perimenopausal middle age women (45-59 years).
Method: a descriptive study was conducted from January to March 2012 at the medical practice # 1 of Luis Galván University Polyclinic in Centro Habana municipality. A sample of 200 patients was selected from a universe of 427 women aged 45 and 59 years.
Results: 74,5 % of them had some kind of sign or symptom of alteration, the most frequent was join sounds, affecting 34.5 % of them.
Conclusions: perimenopausal women and with moderate severity of climacteric syndrome were the most affected. When the severity of the climacteric syndrome increased, the amount of women free of temporomandibular disorders decreased.
