Probiotics and human health

ABSTRACT
The use of probiotic microorganisms is not new, since long time ago, man has been using them
empirically, have only recently been studied and reveal the mechanisms by which they exert
beneficial effects on human health and alleviate various pathologies. This work is an updated
overview of the probiotics knowledge, their characteristics, their mode of action, and the beneficial
effect they have on human health. Also shows the important role in the functioning of the
digestive system and different methods by which exert beneficial effects: competition with
harmful bacteria shift its binding site and inhibiting epithelial growth and death by producing
antibacterial compounds or lowering the pH, improving the intestinal barrier function, production
of important nutrients for intestinal function as well as immunomodulation. It reflects on the use
of probiotics as an alternative in the treatment of various diseases that affect human health,
always considering that the proper use of them, the family used and the dose will be vital factors
in the success.
