Characterization of deceased patients by cancer in the period 1994-2012

ABSTRACT

With the target to know the behavior of neoplasms in our hospital center a descriptive transverse study of 1477 deceased patients older than 15 years and with the diagnosis of a malignant tumor in diverse locations, in the Pathological Anatomy service at Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola Provincial General Teaching Hospital of Ciego de Ávila, between January, 1994 and December, 2012.The information accumulated in the Automated System of Record and Control in Pathological Anatomy (SARCAP); were used for the study. The results are exhibited in tables and per cent. The age ranges the status between 15 and 103 years, the group of deceased was older than 65 years. They are discharged principally from the Internal Medicine unit, Out-of-Hospital and the Intermediate Care Unit. In the first 72 hours, the biggest number of patients dies, the masculine sex were the major group of discharge with this pathology. The most frequent tumors were lung neoplasms, colon carcinoma and prostatic neoplasms. The main direct causes of death included the bronchopneumonia, the multiple metastatic and the pulmonary thromboembolism.Total coincidences in direct cause of death are 51.71% and in the basic ones 42.76%.
