ABSTRACT
Objective: Our aim was to determine the profile of the female user and non-user of a contraceptive method and the cause of non-use. Design: We conducted a descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study. Materials and Methods: Women of fertility age attended a Family Medicine Unit in Mexico City. Non-probabilistic sampling of 150 women was carried out. A specific datacollection questionnaire was applied to participants for identifying the profile of contraceptive method users and non-users and possible causes for non-use of the contraceptive method. Descriptive statistics were applied. Results: The study established the user profile, considering women with an average age of 30 years, married, secondary school education, homemakers, Catholic religion, with two children on average, sexual life beginning at 15 years of age, and without pathology. The most widely employed contraceptive methods are high-continuity (intrauterine device (IUD) and bilateral tubal occlusion (OTB). The non-user female patient is 29.5 years of age, married, with secondary-level schooling, paid worker, Catholic, sexual life initiating at 19 years of age, with one child on average, and is associated with endocrine pathology; in ›50% we should evaluate the counseling of the contraceptive method involved. Conclusions: The study allowed us to establish the profiles of the contraceptive method user and nonuser; nevertheless, established characteristics in both groups only differed with regard to occupation and number of children, as well as greater prevalence of pathology in the non-user female and cause of non-use due to pathology-related side effects.REFERENCES
