ABSTRACT
Plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, and transplant surgery are two relatively new areas in medicine. The constitutive elements of these medical specialties have been progressively added since the time before Christ; but the true birth of these two branches of surgery, as specialties, occurred recently. Both have contributed to great progress in modern medicine through the description and perfection of countless surgical techniques, and the development of new immunosuppressive drugs. Even more significant is the solution to clinical problems that appeared to have no explanation. Reviewing the history and future projections of these two specialties, we found that these branches of modern surgery share not only the same origins but also the same goals. In this paper we review the relevant historical data surrounding the birth of both surgical specialties.
