ABSTRACT
Introduction. Corneal ulcer has been a concern for ophthalmologists because of its
potentially devastating effects, is the most serious complication of contact lens wear.
Methods. We conducted a descriptive study in order to determine the
epidemiological and clinical charac teristics of corneal ulcers by Pseudomonas spp in
contact lens wearers with different purposes in patients who attended a corneal
Institute "Ramón Pando Ferrer". The sample consisted of 18 patients over age 15,
10 females (55.6%) and 8 males (44.4%) and a mean age of 32.1 ± 14.1 years,
with a diagnosis of corneal ulcers in contact lens wearers where the isolated
pathogen was Pseudomonas spp.
Results. The corneal ulcer was more frequent
users of cosmetic contact lenses. 8 patients had grade III injuries, whi ch accounted
for 44.4%, 6 had grade II injuries and only 4, grade I lesions. The curative
treatment in most patients was the drug. Predominated patients without medical
complications.
Conclusions. Corneal ulcers diagnosed with Pseudomonas spp were
more common in cosmetic contact lenses, there were no medical complications.
