ABSTRACT
Background: quantitative determination of thyroid
hormones (T3 and T4) is of great importance for the
diagnosis and assessment of hyperthyroidism,
especially isolated hyperthyroidism caused by T3.
Objective: to establish reference ranges for T3 and
T4 in the nuclear medicine laboratory of the Dr.
Gustavo Aldereguía Lima University General Hospital
in Cienfuegos.
Methods: a prospective descriptive study was
conducted using the radioimmunoassay method, a
competition between unlabeled T3 and T4 and the
hormone labeled by a limited number of binding
sites on the specific antibody. By the reaction
between a fixed amount of tracer and antibody with
different amounts of unlabeled ligand, the amount of
tracer bound by the antibody will be inversely
proportional to the concentration of unlabeled ligand.
Results: the values obtained are described with a
Gaussian distribution (arithmetic mean = 117, SD =
31 for T4; arithmetic mean = 2.64, SD = 0.64 for
T3), which was confirmed by a Chi-square test.
Normal value ranges were 55-178 nmol/L and
1.4-3.9 nmol/L for T4 and T3, respectively.
Conclusion: reference ranges obtained were larger
than those proposed by the producer, especially in
the case of T4.
