ABSTRACT
Introduction. Infertility does not compromise the physical integrity or life but it maintains a negative impact on personal development, harmony, psychological, sexual and social function. Objective. Investigate causes of female infertility, male or mixed in a sample of Mexican couples. Material and methods. Observational, descriptive and retrospective study in couples attending in the Infertility Clinic of Women’s Hospital, Ministry of Health, Mexico City, between 1st January 2010 to June 30th 2011. Results. Sample of 218 couples, women age 29.4 ± 5.3 years, men 31.9 ± 6.3 years. 72% (n = 157) with primary infertility and 28% (n = 61) with secondary infertility. The cause of infertility in 80.6% (n = 176) corresponded to female factor, 9.6% (n = 21) to male factor, 6.9% (n = 15) mixed and 2.9% (n=6) idiopathic causes. Conclusions. The study of the infertile couple should start with making a complete medical record and exhaustive physical examination, and then continue with complementary tests. The main factors to be studied in infertile couples: effective ovulation of oocytes of good quality, adequate sperm production (in quantity and quality) and if both gametes are able to meet and interact in an appropriate manner in the female genital tract.REFERENCES
