ABSTRACT
Background. Burnout syndrome is common in medical practice
and health personnel, with an incidence of 25 to 60%. Risk factors
identified for the development of burnout syndrome are the number
of medical guards and weekly hours of working time.
Objective.
Determine the prevalence of burnout syndrome in staff of the Intensive
Care Unit.
Material and methods. We evaluated 35 individuals
of the Intensive Care Unit by the meter Maslach Burnout
Inventory. There were identified three variables: 1) Emotional
exhaustion, 2) Depersonalization and 3) Personal accomplishment;
which were categorized at three levels: high, medium and low.
Results. 6% of individuals presented high emotional exhaustion,
17% medium and 77% low. The 3% had high depersonalization, 11%
average and 86% lower depersonalization. As for personal
fulfillment, 23% had high, 17% medium and 60% low personal
accomplishment.
Conclusion. Our results show that the
evaluated group had no full criteria for diagnosing Burnout syndrome,
but was characterized by reduced personal accomplishment.
