ABSTRACT
Irritable bowel syndrome
is characterized by chronic
abdominal symptoms and
irregular bowel movements,
which there is no known
structural or anatomical
explanation. Such symptoms,
like abdominal pain, bloating
and bowel pattern abnormalities
compromise patients daily
functioning. In recent years
its pathophysiology has come
to be much better understood,
and has been related to
abnormal motility, visceral
hypersensibility, dysfunctional
gut-brain axis, and psychosocial
abnormalities. New therapeutic
approaches have been developed
to treat these patients, depending
on the predominance of the
symptoms.
