ABSTRACT
Aging is a complex process that
involves changes in molecular,
cellular, physiological and
psychological aspects. Elderly
people are a growing population.
Changes in values in our modern
society put them on a scale
of low social status and their
attendance is the responsibility of
the state, the family and society.
The high body mass index has
a greater risk of death from
cardiovascular, respiratory,
cancer and diabetes. A low BMI
in the elderly also increases
overall mortality and may be
influenced by many different
factors. Its proper evaluation
includes the economic and social
situation of the patient, medical
history besides anthropometric
measurements. Nutrition plays
a major role in the aging process
by modulating the functions
of various organs and tissues.
Often economic, functional and
psychosocial factors negatively
influence the nutritional status
of the elderly. It requires the
coordination of policies for a
healthier old age. The demands
of the elderly should not be
resolved when health problems
are in place, they should be
resolved before.
