ABSTRACT
Iron deficiency is the most common form of anemia in the world, with a prevalence of 30% of the world population. In Mexico it is more common in children under five years old. The consequences of this deficiency are very important, including neurological damage, developmental and behavior abnormalities, which have greater long-term effects, even being irreversible with treatment. Some diagnostic tools that would allow an early diagnosis before reaching clinical anemia are erythrocyte distribution index and mean corpuscular volume. In this study we describe a population that receives child care at a governmental facility, and the factors that influence the presence of anemia in them.
