ABSTRACT
Background: it is well known the impact of a proper diet and nutrition on health and how important is that the general practitioner have adequate training in this subject. Objective: to identify the presence of possible gaps in the training process concerning diet and nutrition during the cycle of basic sciences in the Faculty of Medicine of Villa Clara.
Methods: a descriptive study with a mixed approach and the use of qualitative and quantitative methods was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine in the Medical University of Villa Clara from January to March 2013. It included the triangulation of the information obtained through a questionnaire given to students, a documentary analysis of the syllabuses of the cycle and the curriculum of the course, and from focus groups with students and teachers and interviews with members of the school board.
Results: the results of the questionnaire show deficiencies in the subject being studied. The documentary analysis, the focus groups and the interviews with members of the school board indicated that these topics are treated in a superficial way in the syllabuses, and are not updated.
Conclusions: there is an insufficient curricular planning in the documents of the Medicine curriculum concerning the topic of nutrition. There is lack of knowledge in this area in students on completion of their studies in the basic cycle. Methodological actions are suggested.
