ABSTRACT
Guillain-Barré syndrome is the most common cause of acute paralysis of the peripheral nervous system in developed countries. The most compromising and dreaded complication of this syndrome is respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, present in approximately 30% of patients. The invasive mechanical ventilation is associated with the occurrence of pneumonia and increased mortality. In this paper we recount the clinico-physiological, electrophysiological and serological variables reported in the literature as predictors of respiratory failure and the need for mechanical ventilation in patients with GBS. Determining predictors of respiratory failure and the need for mechanical ventilation in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome is a very important research topic for this disease as early detection of both would allow doctors to prescribe the procedures necessary to alleviate them and thus reduce the mortality of patients with this syndrome.
