ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cancer is a serious health problem. Objective: To determine the mortality due to breast, colon and lung cancer in women, according to demographic strata. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted in the Santa Clara municipality from 2001 to 2008. Information was obtained by the content analysis method, statistical methods were applied according to the research design. Results: Mortality due to lung, breast and colon cancer was 2.7, 2.3 and 1.9 of deaths per 10,000 females, respectively. The “Santa Clara” polyclinic showed the highest rates. Mortality due to these three types of tumors increased with age, lung cancer was the leading cause among young women, except for the group of women aged 20-39 years that was due to breast cancer, colon cancer prevailed in elderly people. The years of potential life lost due to breast cancer matched to the ones lost due to lung cancer with 3.2 per 1000 women. Conclusions: Lung cancer caused more deaths, this indicator varied according to the type of tumor and the area of health. Deaths increased with age, breast cancer deaths were predominantly found in younger women and lung cancer deaths in women over 40 years, and colon cancer was the leading cause of death in older women. Women with breast cancer died younger than those dying from lung cancer, but the number of years of potential life lost, was equal; the indicator rates by areas of health, were generally related to the number of deaths.REFERENCES
