ABSTRACT
The Chevron osteotomy for the first metatarsal was introduced by Corless in 1976, as an alternative for the Mc Bride modified buniectomy in patient with minimum to moderate hallux valgus deformity. Longitudinal prospective study was conducted from 1996 to 2000 in which 32 feet in 30 patients were treated surgically with a Chevron osteotomy in two planes a release of the lateral capsule of the metatarsophalangeal joint and tenotomy of the adductor. The main radiological measurements taken in to consideration were hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, proximal angle surface articular, distal articular surface angle and the position of the sesamoid bones, the indication for the surgery was pain during walking. Thirty two feet were operated in 30 patients, on with 24 females (75%) and 8 males (25%) and range of age 19-34 (means 26.5). The metatarsophalangeal formula of the first and second toes was plus in 13 feet (40.6%), Minus in 11 (34.3%) and plus minus in 8 (25%). This study demonstrates that a Chevron osteotomy is effective and has great results in the long run in patients with minimum to moderate hallux valgus.
