Masseteric inhibitory reflex differences in children and young adults

ABSTRACT
Objective. Identify differences in inhibitory masseteric reflex (IMR) among children and young adults. Material and methods. 66 children (group 1) and 65 adults in (group 2), both groups without alterations in temporomandibular joint and occlusion. The IMR was recorded with surface electromyography over the masseter muscle. During sub-maximal occlusion force was automatically triggered a mechanical stimulus on the chin with a force of 2N to evoke the IMR. On the register was measured: duration of inhibition right-left, amplitude of inhibition right-left, length of right- left potentiation and amplitude of right- left potentiation. Results. Age group 1= 24.8 ± 3.7, 32 women and 34 men. Age Group 2 = 21.66 ± 3.83, 47 women and 18 men. Significant difference was identified by the t Students, the amplitude on both sides between groups (t = 7.28, p = 0.000 and t = 6.47, p = 0.000 respectively). Using Pearson correlation matrix identified more significant correlations (p ≤ 0.05) between the variables than in the potentiation in group 2. Conclusions. The response of the potentiation is organized similarly in children and adults. The process of maturation of the masticatory motor tasks, explored by IMR, is expressed through the organization of the inhibitory response.
