ABSTRACT
Introduction: malocclusions are the third leading cause of dental morbidity following caries and periodontal disease, there are indices relating malocclusion with orthodontic treatment need, with the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), the most widely, which was recognized as an epidemiological tool by OMS in 1997. The purpose of this study was to determine the severity of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need in patients attending the orthodontic clinic of the FEBUAP in a period from July 2009 to July 2010. Materials and methods: we conducted a cross-sectional study using the DAI in 177 study models from 98 women (55.4%) and 79 men (44.6%), obtained from a universe of 328 pretreatment study casts of patients between 12 and 18 years of age. Results: according to the classification of severity of malocclusion of the DAI, it was found that the defined malocclusion was predominant in the study population with 32.8% corresponding to 58 study casts, indicating a need for treatment "effective". Conclusion: the DAI is a useful tool to prioritize the need for orthodontic treatment in institutions providing such services
