Hemipelvectomy in oncological orthopaedics. Analysis of indications, etiology and complications

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The surgical treatment of the pelvic tumors implies procedures as the external and internal hemipelvectomy. The purpose of this work was to determine the general aspects of patients with tumors in the pelvic girdle and to know complications related with the surgical treatment.
Material and methods: This is a restrospective case series study. It was analyzed the type and location of the neoplasia, surgical treatment and remarkable complications.
Results: Fifteen hemipelvectomies were performed in this study. Patient mean was 39 years. There were 9 external hemipelvectomies, and 6 internal without reconstruction. The most frequent findings were an iliac location, histology corresponded to malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Complications were identified in 57% of the cases.
Conclusions: The surgical treatment for tumors of the pelvic girdle represents a significant challenge due its technical difficulty and the high rate of complications that may ensue. The ideal pelvic resection is the one that achievesd appropriate surgical margins followed by satisfactory functionality, and minimal morbidity.
