Grynfelt hernia: our experience with prosthetic repair

ABSTRACT
Background: Lumbar hernia is a relatively rare disease in medical practice, so the aim of our study was to investigate the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and surgical treatment outcomes superior lumbar triangle (Grynfelt space).Material and methods: Five cases of lumbar hernia attended the outpatient hernia surgery reference General Hospital “Juan Bruno Zayas” in Santiago de Cuba; the patients were studied by retrospective clinical observation from September 2004 to September 2006.
Results: The clinical diagnosis was in all patients and confirmed in the surgical procedure, all belonged females, between 50 and 65 years old; common clinical manifestation proved to be reducible, painless mass in left lumbar region high; in three cases the hernia was recurrent. All received elective surgery under spinal anesthesia, prosthetic mesh repair of polypropylene (PP), and hospital discharge at 48 hours. There were no postoperative complications, and follow-up for two years there has been no recurrence.
Conclusions: The diagnosis of herniated Grynfelt is clinical and prosthetic repair is a safe and effective method.
