ABSTRACT
Acute appendicitis (AA) is the main differential
diagnosis in acute abdomen. 250,000 cases of
appendicitis occur annually, and it presents
mainly between the second and third decades of
life. The precise function of the appendix is
unknown, but it is part of the immune system
involved in the secretion of IgA. Obstruction of
the lumen is the most common cause. It is
characterized by abdominal pain that develops
within 24 hours, and it is located in the right
lower quadrant. The diagnosis is clinical, it’s
based on scales and is confirmed by laboratory
and imaging studies. Its definitive treatment is
surgical.
