ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the incidence of delirium in the ICU of Highly Specialized Regional Hospital of Oaxaca.
Methods: We performed a prospective, transversal, observational and descriptive investigation in patients older than 16 years, with over 24 hours of ICU stay of November 1, 2012 to April 30, 2013, in which we used the CAM-ICU (Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU) for diagnosis of delirium.
Results: We evaluated a total of 81 patients. The incidence of delirium was 35.8%. The most common comorbidities were diabetes and hypertension. Smoking, alcohol and drug abuse had a stronger association with the onset of delirium. The use of sedation (OR 6.6, p = 0.0002), mechanical ventilation (OR 11.84, p = 0.0000032) and sepsis (OR 6.76, p = 0.0001) accounted for risk factors for the development of delirium. An increase in the length of stay in ICU (8.66, ± 5.02), hospital stay (17.78, ± 12.12) and mortality (34.4%).
Conclusion: The incidence of delirium was similar to that reported in other studies. The main risk factors were sedation, mechanical ventilation and sepsis and was associated with a longer hospital stay and higher mortality.
