ABSTRACT
Introduction. The cochlear implant’s main objectives in the pediatric population are those principally related to hearing and language habilitation. However, not every deaf patient must be considered as a candidate to this device implantation, and the candidates selection criteria had changed since it’s been used around the world. Audiometric thresholds and age are considered a very important part from audiologic criteria, because their direct influence in brain plasticity and language acquisition possibilities. Pediatric patients implantation must be based on well stablished criteria and as far as possible from subjective observations from the audiologic point of view. In order to “ease” this criteria, we propose a patient’s classification based on their audiometric thresholds, taking international experience as reference and always with the early intervention concept on mind (the lower the age, the better habilitation possibilities, and vice versa).
