ABSTRACT
Writing is a code derived from language, established by the need to communicate in a way that is more perdurable than verbal. It is mainly represented by a series of signs, arbitrarily chosen and defined, used to encode the message underneath it. The communicative function allows people to interact and learn about each other, even transcending through time. We discuss the mechanisms and functional basis of writing, as well as the history of writing and its development through time and through the normal functional development.
