ABSTRACT
The most frequent cancer originated in head and neck mucosae is the squamous cell carcinoma; its frequency has increased particularly in countries under development. The most important etiological factor is the consumption of tobacco and alcohol. It appears mainly in male people with a media of 50 years old. Recently, more frequency has been reported in non-smokers – non-drinkers, mainly in young women, probably related to the presence of the human papilloma virus. Suspending the tobacco habit decreases the risk but it may not be equal to the one of the population who has never smoked; passive exposition to tobacco smoke has been related to a risk twice greater in comparison to those who have not been exposed. The most frequent site of tumor location is the tongue. The prognosis depends on the clinical stage, therefore the identification of the population under risk, the preceding injuries and an early diagnosis decrease the mortality rate; nevertheless, the greatest effort must be on primary prevention, preventing tobacco – alcohol intoxication. The objective of this article is to analyze the most significant etiological factors and to make emphasis on prevention and timely detection of the carcinoma originated in head and neck mucosae.
