Twenty years of experience with hematopoietic cell transplantation in the Clínica Ruiz, Puebla, Mexico

ABSTRACT

In the Centro de Hematología y Medicina Interna de Puebla, located within the Clínica RUIZ, an hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplant program was started on May, 1993. Between that date and February 2013, a total of 301 HSC transplants have been done. Special emphasis has been placed in making affordable the HSC transplantation procedures to patients living in underprivileged circumstances. This program is currently the largest private practice transplant program in the country and, being a “twin” HSC transplant program with that of the Hospital Universitario de Nuevo León in Monterrey, México, more than 100 publications in both domestic and foreign peer-reviewed journal have been produced. The simplification of the grafting procedures has resulted in a substantial decrease of the costs. The median cost of an autograft in the program is 15 000 USD, whereas the median cost of the allograft is 20 000 USD. The program reports to several both domestic and international registries: To the Secretaría de Salud del Estado de Puebla, the Centro Nacional de Trasplantes, the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Registry (CIBMTR), to BMT Infonet and to Worldwide Network for Blood & Marrow Transplantation (WBMT). The long term-results of both the autografts and allografts conducted in this program are similar to those informed from other bone marrow transplantation programs, both in México and abroad.
