ABSTRACT
The word reflux derived from the Latin word
re“back” and
fluere
“flow”. Laryngo-pharyngeal reflux (LPR) refers to the return of stomach
contents into the laryngopharynx. Its origin is believed to be
caused by reflux of gastric contents. While laryngopharyngeal reflux
and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) share similarities in
their pathophysiology are considered separate entities, with specific
symptoms and treatment needs. This article summarizes 26 references
obtained primarily through Ovid Technologies and the portal of
Revistas Médicas Mexicanas.
