ABSTRACT
Background Vertigo is a common entity that is most often seen in adults, and is now considered an epidemiological problem. Although there are multiple pathologies that cause it, in a high percentage an accurate diagnosis cannot be established. Multiple drugs have been used with varying success in relieving it.Objectives To collect information about combination of piracetam and dihydroergocristine in patients with peripheral or central vertigo and to document the reliefe obtained with this treatment.
Material and method An observational study was made inviting specialist physicians to obtain information related to their perception in usual clinical practice with patients with vertigo in a determined period, about symptoms and their quality of life with the treatment of piracetam and dihydroergocristine. Questionnaires validated for symptoms and quality of life were applied; mainly Dizziness Handicap Inventory was used, because it is a highly spread and standardized tool in patients with vertigo, dizziness or instability.
Results Information from 48 physicians assessing 500 patients with vertigo was obtained. Patients received the combination of piracetam and dihydroergocristine. All symptoms had an important percentage reduction among patients after the treatment with piracetam and dihydroergocristine.
Conclusions Combination of piracetam and dihydroergocristine represents an efficient option in the treatment of symptoms associated to vertigo and improves substantially the quality of life of patients with this disease.
