ABSTRACT
Background Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) remains a therapeutic challenge, since there is currently no cure for this disease; in addition to the high impact in quality of life of patients. The mechanism of RRP infection is favored by the disruption of the mucous membranes, particularly in the transition zones of two epithelia. Objective To study the association of the clinical course of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis with gastroesophageal reflux.
Material and method An experimental, observational and prospective study of a consecutive sample of patients with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis was made to research molecular biology, epidemiology, evolution and associated factors.
Results Only one pH-metry showed a pathological report. Six patients had data of gastritis, one of esophagitis and four of incompetent hiatus. Comparing the rate of recurrences per year with reflux, based on the pH-metry, there was no direct association between the rate of recurrences per year and the pathologic result of pH-metry.
Conclusions The results showed that the reflux is not a factor in the course of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, so there is no data that justify antireflux treatment in patients with this disease.
