ABSTRACT
Introduction: chronic glaucoma is considered one of the main causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Objective: to characterize myopia as a risk factor for primary open-angle glaucoma in patients suspected of the disease.
Methods: a descriptive and prospective study was conducted in a group of 50 patients suspected of having glaucoma and myopia. The study was carried out in "Dr. Salvador Allende " clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital, in Havana, in the period from June 2006 to April 2007.
Results: there was a predominance of patients aged 40 years and over (60 %), male sex (60 %) and blacks (56 %). It was found higher mean intraocular pressure values, fluctuation and visual field changes in moderate myopia, as well as asymmetry in the cup/disc ratio as fundoscopic alteration. Among the other risk factors studied, the reference of a family history of the disease was the most frequent.
Conclusions: it was evidenced an association between primary open-angle glaucoma and patients with myopic ocular anatomical features.
