ABSTRACT
Introduction: low birth weight is the most important predictive index of infant mortality.
Objective: to determine some risk factors associated with Low Birthweight, in Güines
municipality, Mayabeque province.
Methods: a retrospective case-control analytic study was conducted. The universe and the
sample were constituted by the total number of children born since January 1st, 2005 to December
31st, 2009. General data of children were studied, elements of family living and environmental
conditions and child's mortality in the period was comparatively determined as an indicator.
Results: sex behaved with a slight predominance for male, in group I predominated families with
a regular sanitary culture unlike group II where the highest percentage was in those of good culture,
and in those with poor culture there was a higher percentage of low weight, most of mothers had a
middle education level and a predominance of extensive family in both study groups.
Conclusions: there was a predominance of males and urban origin. The lowest instruction
corresponded to mothers of low birth weight children and prevalence of extensive family, the
highest percentage in low birth weight in families with poor sanitary culture. Children weighing less
than 2500 g are more likely to die. It is recommended to continue working on the maternal-child
program to lower rates of low birth weight and infant mortality rate.
