Adjustment of drug dosage in the elderly

ABSTRACT
Modification to medication doses received by elderly adults is of major importance to a rational use of drugs. In most cases, the need of adequacy resides in multiple physiological changes that geriatrics show and its impact on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medication, as an example: the increase of distribution volume, decrease of blood perfusion and lower metabolism as well as elimination. Monitoring of renal function through diverse formula that estimate glomerular filtration rate, dosing by weight and measurement of serum concentrations are helpful to dose adjustment.
