ABSTRACT
Avascular necrosis of the sesamoid bones otherwise known as Renander’s disease is a rare entity which can affect any sesamoid bone. It generally occurs in young athletic women between 9 and 17 years of age due to repetitive trauma and hiperxtension of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Initial treatment consists of activity modification and non-steroidal antiinflamatory drugs.
Case report: We present the case of a 26 year old woman with avascular necrosis of the lateral sesamoid bone of the first metatarsophalangeal joint who was treated by surgical resection after an initial poor response to conservative treatment.
Discussion: Renander’s disease is a rare entity which must be ruled out in cases of chronic sesamoid pain. We consider that surgical excision plays an important role in its treatment.
