ABSTRACT
Background: suicide has remained among the ten leading
causes of death in Cuba. Nevertheless, its determinants have
not been established yet.
Objective: to identify risk factors associated with suicide in
people over 19 years of age.
Methods: a study of 81 cases and 162 witnesses older than 19
years was conducted in the municipality of Sancti Spiritus from
2005 to 2009. The variables analyzed were age, sex, skin color,
marital status, family history of schizophrenia (among parents,
uncles and siblings), psychotic affective disorders, personality
disorders and suicidal behaviour as well as personal diagnoses
of schizophrenia, psychotic affective disorders, neurotic
depression, personality disorders, alcoholism, personal history
of suicidal ideation in the last five years, previous suicide
attempts and limitations or sequelae of somatic disease. Data
was collected from notifiable disease cards, medical records
and personal interviews with witnesses in addition to patients’
and witnesses’ close relatives. The odd ratio (OR) was used as
measurement of association. Confusing factors were controlled
through dichotomous logistic regression.
Results: multivariate analysis showed a significant association
among suicide and schizophrenia (OR 8,10; CI 95 % 1,48-44,36),
neurotic depression (OR 3,16; CI 95 % 1,19-8,35), personality
disorders (OR 7,22; CI 95 % 2,40-21,72), alcoholism (OR 4,72; CI
95 % 1,46-15,26), suicidal ideation in the past five years (OR
7,35; CI 95 % 2,77-19,72) and limitations or sequelae of somatic
disease (OR 3,87; CI 95 % 1,75-8,58).
Conclusions: schizophrenia, neurotic depression, alcoholism,
personality disorders, suicidal ideation in the last five years as
well as the limitations or sequelae of somatic disease were
identified as independent risks factors in adults over 19 years of
age.
