ABSTRACT
Introduction and objectives: Psychopathological features of patients with epilepsy are incompletely studied. The aim of this study was to determine the personality behavior in their dimensions of stable or unstable (neurotic) and balance or not introversionextroversion in patients who suffer from epilepsy.
Methods: The personality of a group of 200 epileptic patients attended as outpatient offices were studied based on Eysenck test with in order to analyze the influence of general, biological and medicament factors on the personality as well as some psychosocial factors.
Results: There were more unstable patients suffering from idiopathic generalized epilepsy (OR = 14.6; P = 0.007). There was less balance in patients with family history of epilepsy (OR = 2.8; P = 0.015) and those with poor emotional adjustment were more unstable (OR = 3.8; P = 0.0001). Patients with bad interpersonal adaptation presented less balance (OR = 3.2; P = 0.009) and those with bad vocation adjustment were more unstable (OR = 2.8; P = 0.0005); also, patients who referred to have a bad economic position suffered from more neurosis (OR = 2.5; P = 0.004) and unbalance (OR = 2.7; P=0.009). Finally, patients with global psychological malfunction also were more unstable (OR = 3.3; P ‹ 0.001) and more unbalance (OR = 5.1; P = 0.03).
Conclusions: From the factors studied, the ones that caused changes on personality were the biological factors such as sex, age, and epilepsy types. The remaining factors related to personality were the social factors and among them the economical position and global psychological functioning were the most important ones.
