ABSTRACT
The highest percentage mortality in lambs occurs during the first days of life, and one of
the most important minerals in sheeps during this stage is selenium (Se). Its deficiency
causes white muscle disease. The most part of Mexico presents selenium deficiency
problems. Requirements for sheep Se dependends on the amount of vitamin E in the
diet; experiences in Mexico suggest to use a dose of 0.25 mg Se in apparently healthy
lambs and 0.5 mg Se in lambs that signed in muscular dystrophy. From 3 mg/kg. of
body weight, orally subministrated can occur cases of acute toxicity.
