ABSTRACT
Cuye or Guinea pigs are rodents that are produced in several countries in South
American do to their meat and exported to other countries. Their meat contains 19.5% protein. In Mexico, the vast majority of weaned guinea pigs are sold as pets at pet shops
and aquariums for about $60.00 Mexican pesos. The main of the research was to
quantify production parameters of guinea pigs (
Cavia porcellus) from birth to their
sacrifice in a farm in Nayarit, Mexico. The measured variables during the birth and
lactation stage were: number of live pups per birth, pup weight and weight at weaning
(10 days old). The production cost of a single guinea pig at weaning was estimated, only
for expenses from direct inputs during two years production. Sacrifice live weight and
the carcass yield of male cuye (5 month) without fasting were measured. The number of
live pups per litter was 3.46 ± 1.4. Regarding the average birth weight it was 86.7 ± 21.6
g and the weaning weight was 167.9 ± 24.6 g. The production cost of a single guinea
pig at weaning was $30.14 Mexican pesos. Encountered averages for live weight,
carcass weight and carcass yield percentage for males were 955 ± 106 g, 420 ± 54 g
and 43.98 ± 3 respectively. We conclude that the guinea pig production system
represents a family farm business opportunity to sell guinea pig as pets, as well as
producing meat for local consumption.
