ABSTRACT
Objective assessment of metamemory is useful for predicting memory task performance and has clear clinical implications. This paper presents a proposal for a metamemory measure that would permit, on one hand, greater precision made by the subject in estimating the differences between what they think is their memory capacity and their actual performance by using analysis based on Signal Detection Theory (SDT), and on the other hand, greater sensitivity when considering the estimation after encoding and during information retrieval. Accuracy and sensitivity are made operative through two parameters that have been termed Estimation of Discrimination and Metamemory Adjustment. This proposal allows for an objective approach to metamemory difficulties that arise in different pathologies, facilitating their study and the understanding of the relationship it has with other cognitive processes.
