ABSTRACT
Since ancient rabies has been described and classified, first as an action involving supernatural forces and then as a virulent
disease transmitted by contact with infected animals, especially dogs. Gradually, the study of symptoms resulted in a diagnosis
and possibly treatment emerged, including those due to Louis Pasteur (1885) and Dr. Eduardo Liceaga (1887), who issued the
rabies vaccine based on the work of Pasteur. From the epidemiological point of view, rabies is classified as urban and wild,
including the dog as the main transmitter agent in urban alternative and bat, coyote and fox in the wild one. After infection, the
subsequent periods are: incubation, prodromal, neurological, coma and death. For these stages, treatment consists of prophylaxis
and vaccination. Aspects that are reviewed in this paper.
