ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare epidural obstetric analgesia using Bupivacaine with or without Phentanyl, measuring the effect and the repercussion upon the mother and the product. Methods: A prospective, transverse, comparative, double blind and experimental study of 32 patients with term, single pregnancies in the first stage of labor was undertaken. Patients randomly entered groups: “A” (n= 16) Bupivacaine (3.75 mg) with Phentanyl (100 µg) or “B” (n= 16) Bupivacaine (12.5 mg). The variables studied were: a) the mother basal and postanalgesia condition, and assessment of pain by Visual Analogue Scale Score; b) the products Apgar and Sivlerman scores, and average oxygen saturation. The mean measures of each variable between both groups were analyzed using χ2. Results: Group “A” had less hemodynamic repercussion upon the patient, with better analgesia, and the baby´s postanalgesic conditions were superior to those of group “B”. Conclusion: Better-quality analgesia, with improved maternal and neonatal conditions were achieved using Bupivacaine with phentanyl. Definitive results will require further study with a larger sample, to determine the existence of low incidence adverse effects.REFERENCES
