ABSTRACT
An international and national abuse/dependence on cocaine numeric view is presented, which offers a quick and complete overview of the topic, in terms of consumer demand, omitting individual, family and group repercussions derived from its sociolegal aspects. The educational purpose of this statement, in terms spread out the characteristics of this disease and its clinical variations will make it easy to be recognized and properly evaluated by health personnel. Accordingly, the main pharmacologic and chemical characteristics of the substance are described, its origin and variety of products that come out for consumption. To the clinical aspects of the article (intoxication and withdrawal syndromes, and the induced: delusional syndrome, psychotic disorder with hallucinations or delusional thoughts, and mood, anxiety, sexual and sleep disorders) the international recommendations for diagnosis and treatment are added, according to the conditions and national resources. It is emphasized the importance of continuing with joint handling (pharmacological and psychotherapeutic) once the acute symptomatology are controlled, through intervention on interpersonal conflicts, changes in the paper, labor problems and other interpersonal deficits, as it has been documented a higher efficiency than the symptomatic handling. Lastly, attention is focused on the prevention of relapse, to encourage complete remission of the symptoms, and ensure an effective case handling in the long term.
