ABSTRACT
Introduction: In intensive care units, mortality is the best evaluation measure of its
performance. Many studies have aimed to assess such a variable.
Method: A retrospective
observational study was conducted to describe the behavior of variables related with mortality in
ventilated patients from June 2007 to June 2011 in the intensive care unit from General Teaching
Hospital, in Morón. In this period corroborated 163 patients, 92 of these died. 57 medical histories
were evaluated of which data could be obtained to carry out the study.
Results: The age of the
patients was 63.3 years, with a predominance of males, 9 days ventilated and 10.5 days in the
unit. The average value of the APACHE II score was 20.3 points, it expected a mortality rate of
40%; however, the observed mortality was 56%. Predominated non-surgical patients: chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease and acute myocardial heart attack. The 11.76% died from multiple
organ failure. The ventilator-associated pneumonia appeared as a complication in 45.6% of the
cases, it provided a fatality of 63.4%. The 52.6% of the patients received a score between 19 and
24. When calculating the risk of dying it was found a likelihood of 61.6%.
Conclusions: The
ventilated patient mortality is high, the calculation of the risk of dying is a useful tool.
