ABSTRACT
Severe sepsis and septic shock
have come to be a challenge in
terms of early recognition and
proper approach, clinically may
exist confusion in differentiate a
systemic inflammatory response
syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis,
which may result in a delay in
the diagnosis and treatment,
hence lies the importance of
defining each term, because a
patient can course with noninfectious
SIRS and self-limited,
in contradiction with severe
sepsis which requires early and
aggressive approach to improve
survival. Currently the use of
biomarkers represents a tool for
diagnosis, prognosis and decision
regarding antibioticotherapy
