ABSTRACT
The self-expanding metal stent is
a device used to treating patients
with malignant esophageal
and gastro esophageal junction
obstruction. The aim of this
effective palliative treatment
is to restore patient’s ability to
eat. The goal of this research
is to review the outcomes of
the usage of this method in
the Hospital Max Peralta de
Cartago. The method used was
a retrospective study about
the experiences in the hospital
mentioned before in the area
known as Centro de Detección
Temprana de Cáncer Gástrico.
The study focused on the
endoscopic palliative treatment
of 19 patients who suffered
esophageal cancer and gastro
esophageal junction cancer in
an advanced stage of disease.
The information was collected
from clinical files, reports of
radiologic and endoscopic
procedures as well as a survey.
The results showed that most
of the patients improved their
ability to eat in a lap of twenty
four hours after procedure with
a diet based on soft and solid
food. The conclusion is that the
self-expanding metal stent is an
effective, safe, palliative method
for treating esophageal cancer
and gastro esophageal junction
cancer in an advanced stage of
disease.
