Multiple sclerosis in Latin America. Are McDonald’s criteria really applicable?

ABSTRACT
The McDonald Criteria was designed by an international committee to facilitate early and precise diagnosis of Multiple
Sclerosis (MS), was developed in 2001 and revised in 2005. The criteria basically utilize magnetic resonance (MR) techniques,
includes spinal cord lesions and incorporates CSF and visual evoked potentials for immunopathologic confirmation and
multifocality. The criteria even though provides important contributions presents as well difficulties in its literal application
to Latin America in view of the economic constrictions involved in the performance of repeated MR studies to confirm
dissemination, the fact that is based in observations on Caucasian patients and does not include regional clinical
peculiarities. Additional criteria is required.
