ABSTRACT

Obesity is a chronic multifactorial disease, considered the most common nutritional disorder in America, and also is considered a risk factor for various systemic diseases. Chronic inflammation has a multidirectional link with obesity, chronic periodontitis and other conditions. Recently, periodontal disease has been linked to obesity and some authors suggest that obesity may be a risk factor for chronic periodontitis, but this association has not been established yet. The exact mechanism by which both diseases are linked remains under investigation. The idea of this review is to provide current information on the relationship between the two diseases and the possible role that obesity plays in chronic periodontitis; thus, the periodontist or general dentist can educate, awareness and prevent patients suffering from these diseases on the relationship between them, thus, contributing to the improvement of oral and general health.
