Risk factors of cerebrovascular diseases in Ciego de Ávila municipality. January- May, 2011

ABSTRACT

It was carried out an analytical observacional study of matched case-control (1:1), of patients admitted in the Provincial Hospital “Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola” in Ciego de Avila, from January to May 2011, in order to identify the possible risk factors association with the appearance of cerebrovascular diseases. The investigated variables were: personal pathological antecedents of high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, auricular fibrillation, hypercholesterolemia, obesity and smoking habit. The analysis of the obtained data showed the predominance of masculine sex (60.4%) and the age group from 80 to 84 years (26.4%). High blood pressure almost quintuplicated the risk of cerebrovascular disease (OR 4.8) and the obesity in the similar way (OR 4.5); the auricular fibrilation almost quadruplicated the risk (OR 3.75) and the hyperlipidemia and diabetes mellitus tripled it respectively. If it was eliminated or reduced the exhibition to the following factors, high blood pressure, obesity, hyperlipidemia, auricular fibrilation and diabetes mellitus, it would reduced the incidence of cerebrovascular disease in the population in a 69.31%, 54.31%, 49.84%, 44.58% and 39.08% respectively. The multivariate analysis showed that only personal pathological antecedents of high blood pressure showed association statistically significant, with OR of 3.3 and value p of 0,012.
