ABSTRACT
Pneumonia is one of the main responsible of hospitalization in the elderly and the first cause of death for infectious etiology in people 65 years of age or older. There are factors that put at risk for this entity particularly elders such as: immunological aging-related disorders, oropharynx colonization, etc. Although the more frequent causes are still Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, there are becoming more common the gram-negative bacilli, mainly Klebsiella pneumoniae and atypical such Legionella, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydophila pneumoniae. A current guidelines for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia in elderly doesn’t differ from the recommendations in young adults, although they emphasize the establishment of appropriate and early therapy.
